Hate to disagree with Bruce but I say NO!!! Among other reasons, using automotive oil will void your warranty (if you still have one). Motorcycle oil has more anti-foaming agents and more cleaning agents (phosphates) than automotive oil, both of which are needed in air cooled engines. Choose whatever brand you want except Harley Davidson oil. It's made for a different lubrication system and will not work well in your Savage.
Change your oil often and change your filter EVERY TIME. That's important and it's really cheap in the long run.
